It is a beautiful instrument and sure to inspire any trombonist lusting for a new toy. These bells never come up for sale, be the only kid on the block with one. It was built in the 1930s and shows no signs of serious repairs or damage. Practice mutes are designed to reduce the volume of sound to a minimum, whilst still keeping the playing feeling as close as possible to the un-muted feel (as open as possible). Perhaps I should have also mentioned the final chorale; here, Richter does capture some of the 'transcendental magnificence' of the trombones, especially in the second half, where you can hear the trombones 'blasting away' in the background.

It was then that the orchestral musicians adopted the trombone for themselves. The Reynolds Contempora double valve bass trombone was one of the first of its kind. This one has two piece valve casings with nickel and brass. Over the remains of three of these once juvenile trombonists, those heart-rending instruments have sounded their woeful tones, and the grass grows green over their graves.
